Joining the Cast and Crew

Don't be frightened; it only hurts the first time, and we'll be gentle.
Divas and Princesses are lovely, thanks, but Drama Queens will be cordially beaten.

Joining Crew:

If you're looking to join the crew, you want to e-mail the Crew Director, and introduce yourself at a show.

Joining Cast:

If you want to join the cast of our little company, you do that through auditioning at a rehearsal. Rehearsals are usually in the afternoon before a show, most often about 3pm (unless plans change). To go onstage with us you do need to be 18 years of age, so if you're not quite there yet, practice a lot so we can cast you when you are that old. If you're still interested after reading all this, e-mail the Cast Director for the secret location of our test kitchens. But you don't really know if you even want to do it yet, do you? So hang on...

What should I be prepared to do?

I'm sure we'll think of *something*, but besides that...

You'll need to be ready to perform a given scene featuring the character for which you want to audition. We're not looking for you to be a seamless part of the scene; for one thing, real blocking is never like watching the movie. But we do expect you to have a grasp of the character's personality, to be able to accurately lip-synch, to 'body-synch' i.e. move when they move and how. You need to be able to do this without looking at the screen or dropping character when yours isn't actually onscreen; do something appropriate during those moments.

Once you get to rehearsal, relax. Have fun. You know what you know by that point anyway, so just chill out and do your best. You'll do better that way, and you won't seem like a scary eyelet-counter. If we get the sense that you can be taught, so much the better.

What scene do I have to do? Do I have to get nekkid?

Of course not. We have no way of knowing at this point if you're cute or not. But, honestly, it does help if you were at the back of the line when modesty was being handed out. At the show you'll be changing clothes and seeing others change clothes and yes, our costumes include underwear. But, that's another topic.

For the following parts, please be ready to do the following scenes with us:

What on earth shall I wear?

For heaven's sake don't go out and buy a whole costume. Just dress as appropriately for the scene as you can from what you have (or can beg from friends.) If you don't have anything even close, just try to wear something that gets the right feel across.

Save the buying costumes for when you get on cast. Then you get to go buy, make, find all the costume pieces. But we'll give you plenty of tips, and you and you can talk to the Cast Director about what's too anal and what's too slack. Getting the costume takes some creativity, especially if you're broke, but it's part of the blissful joy of it all. We do have cast friends who are great at sewing and often volunteer to help make parts, but we can't promise them to you.

So now I'm on cast... Now what?

Once you've got all your costume stuff, and we feel you know the part well enough, you're ready to go onstage. You'd need to be able to come to rehearsals the day of each show for a couple of hours. (We can all improve.) But we all pretty much like each other and get along and have fun, even for a Rocky cast, so going to practice is pretty enjoyable. You might be asked to play a different role occasionally if we're short-staffed, and you can ask to play a different role sometimes, especially on a Switch Night which is specifically for that. You'd need to be at the show with your costume even if you're not performing on a given night, if you can, just in case someone accidentally loses a toe halfway through or something. If you have any questions or problems do go and talk to the Cast Director about it and try not to be an asshole; she's still working on the mind-reading thing, but it's not always working. You'll get more details, but that's about all there is to it!

Umm... That sure looks like a lot... Maybe I'm not sure now...

No, no, no! It's much more cumbersome to explain than actually to do. Wait, don't go! ...Damn, lost another one... Wait, you changed your mind? You want to try out! Cool! Email the Cast Director. Awesome!
